MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

(Yumna Al-Arashi / WTA)

The “Serena Williams Group” is the first to go in singles as the year-end WTA Finals get under way in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

It’s probably the deeper group, although Madison Keys was a bit of q question mark as she hasn’t played in quite awhile, choosing a training block this fall instead. And that turned out to show.

In doubles, it’s the Martina Navratilova Group, perhaps the (relatively) weaker of the two groups.

The fact that defending champions, the Cana-Kiwis Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe, saw their points from that title drop off before this tournament means they dropped down to the No. 3 seed.

And that means they turned out to be in a group with Siniakova and Townsend, and Andreeva and Shnaider.

(Riyadh is 7 hours ahead through Saturday, 8 hours ahead after that)
