After one last ill-fated comeback attempt earlier this summer, Kimiko Date is saying ‘Sayonara’ for good this week at a WTA International tournament in Tokyo, Japan.
Date, who turns 47 later this month, returned a decade ago after a 12-year retirement and had some good results.
But major knee surgery and now, assorted other injuries mean the body has sent the spirit the final message.
Date isn’t healthy, and hasn’t played. So her final match is likely to be against Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic in the first round on Tuesday afternoon.
