On the eve of the Day 1 of the new-look Davis Cup finals, we took a dive into ticket sales for all of the various sessions.
The takeaway is that … the ticket sales are woefully poor. And it’s not because the tickets are especially overpriced.
The only sold-out pool sessions so far are the two involving host nation Spain.
Great Britain is doing pretty well – albeit in Stadium 3, which seats about 2,500.
Beyond that, fine seats remain available – even in the lower tiers, near the court, for some matches.
Expectations exceeded demand
It’s hard to know exactly what kind of expectations they had for this inaugural year. Did they think that the presence of Nadal and Djokovic would be enough to cast a glow over the entire event?
It’s notable that the four semifinalists at last week’s ATP Tour finals all will be absent: Roger Federer, Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem and champion Stefanos Tsitsipas.
So there isn’t even a potential bump of late ticket sales to capitalize on the exposure those four had over the last few days.
As of apprximately a.m. CEST Monday in Madrid, here are the tickets remaining for each session, per the event’s ticketing site.
A caveat: there may be some of tickets sold but don’t show up that way on the site, or other factors we’re not aware of.
Still, many of them are truly dismal.
Perhaps most startling is the availability (so far) for the matches involving Djokovic and Serbia. Only 7,700 of 12,000 sold for the Caja Majica against Japan (a Wednesday day session). And only 5,661 sold for a Thursday day session against France.
The final is virtually sold out. But more than 2,000 tickets remain for the day session semifinals on Saturday.
