Nicolas Almagro, who hit the top 10 back in 2011 and won 13 ATP Tour titles, returns this week.
But it’s only to say goodbye. He wrote a letter.
Almagro announced his retirement at the new Murcia Challenger Monday.
Now 33, the Spaniard never really recovered from a knee injury suffered on court against Juan Martin del Potro at the 2017 French Open.
He tried to come back, then missed nine months. After losing the first round of five tournaments, he’s been off the Tour since September.
But Murcia is home. He’ll meet compatriot Mario Vilella in the first round Tuesday.
