Belinda Bencic was the higher seed in Abu Dhabi, but Liudmila Samsonova is the more explosive player who can get on an absolute run of form that can leave her opponent without many solutions. But Bencic withstood the first-set barrage, saved three match points and took her second title of 2023.
And in Linz, a surprise run to the final from Petra Martic, who is the No. 6 seed but hasn’t played like that in quite awhile.
But Anastasia Potapova, a great junior who has long been expected to hit the upper echelons of women’s tennis but has taken a meandering road to get there, took the title – the second of her career.
