INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Four years ago at the BNP Paribas Open, it all began for Bianca Andreescu.
She was just 18, everything was new and (almost) easy and there was everything to aspire to and play for.
The 22-year-old here this week for only the second time since she won the tournament and went on to win the US Open six months later.
Her only other appearance was in the October version in 2021, when she beat Alison Riske and then lost to Anett Kontaveit (who was having a heck of a 2021, it has to be said).
Andreescu got off to a good start on Saturday night. After dropping the first set to hard-hitting young American Peyton Stearns, she rallied to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Here’s what it looked like.
The reward – such as it is – is a date with world No. 1 Iga Swiatek.
Here’s what she said afterwards.

I was really impressed with Bianca’s playing in last night’s match. She used her variety well, her defense was top-notch, she stayed focused, & really dug in when she had to. Hope she can stay injury-free, & continue on this path.
