With the win by Jannik Sinner over Novak Djokovic on Tuesday, the permutations during this final round of the group stages were clear.
If Sinner won against Holger Rune in the night match and went 3-0, he’d finish first in the group and will play the No. 2 in the other group. Really, any scenario where Sinner wins gave him the group, with Djokovic finishing second.
Sinner dealt with a back issue in the second set, but fought through, sent Rune home and did Djokovic – and the tournament – a huge solid. He didn’t *need* to do it; once he won the first set, he was guaranteed a semifinal slot. But there was plenty at stake ayway.
The question now will be how he pulls up for Saturday.
(Turin is six hours ahead of EST).
