A rematch of last year’s final is the match that most (if they’re being honest) hoped would happen in this year’s men’s singles final.

They’re arguably the two best top players on grass. So it was all falling into place. Except – it was one-way traffic.

It was far from a certainty in the leadup to the tournament that Novak Djokovic, who had a procedure on his meniscus June 5, after going out of Roland Garros.

Five weeks later, he was looking for revenge from Alcaraz’s (then) shock win in 2023. But he didn’t bring much to the court on the day. And Alcaraz brought far too much.
