There are a lot of seeds missing from this lineup – the last of the round-of-16 matches.

But as it happens, the two No. 1s – both scheduled for the Arthur Ashe night session – will be the only ones who will face the seed that was, on paper, their theoretical opponent when the draw came out.

Which doesn’t mean No. 5 Jasmine Paolini and No. 6 Jessica Pegula didn’t have serious tasks ahead of them. Paolini went out fairly routinely – 69 minutes – to Muchova.

All in all, a pretty routine, somewhat somnabulant day with only two sets played over the minimum and one upset on paper that wasn’t truly one in reality.
