This week, Jannik Sinner nailed down the year-end No. 1 ranking for 2024.
Sunday, he took on the perennial No. 1 the last few years.
Novak Djokovic held a slim 4-3 lead in their head-to-head. But Sinner had won three of the last four.
The two have never met anywhere but big occasions – Three times in majors, twice at the ATP Finals, once at the Davis Cup finals and now, twice in Masters 1000.
And Sinner has now evened up the head-to-head at 4-4.
If Djokovic had won, it would have been his 100th career title. He’s flinched – just a tad – on these milestone occasions in recent years – with the notable exception of his bucket-list moment at the Olympics.
The week of matches looked like it took a toll on him, and he didn’t quite have the energy he needed to keep up with the 15-years-younger Sinner. But he wasn’t far.
