The last three WTA-level tournaments of the season are this week, with Hong Kong and Jiangxi (moved from Nanchang) at the 250 level. And also the Mérida event in Mexico.

They are mostly bereft of the top level of players either preparing for the WTA Finals next week, or having simply ended their season.

So, like last week, it’s an opportunity for lower-ranked players to make some points before they end their own seasons.

And it was an opportunity for former No. 1 Simona Halep, whose comeback has (to say the least) stalled after her anti-doping suspension was reduced last winter, to finish with some confidence.

Given the draws, she didn’t get the best one as she faced No. 6 seed Yuan Yue, and lost in straight sets.
