Alexandre Müller, who won his first career ATP Tour title on Sunday in Hong Kong – and came back from a set down in all of his matches to do it – had accepted the special exempt spot and is set to play in Auckland.

Most of the others who went deep last week – including Brisbane champion Jiri Lehecka and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard – declined (probably wisely) to play. In the end, so did Muller.

Also – Canadian Gabriel Diallo was in action in Auckland, where he drew a tough first-rounder in Lorenzo Sonego. He had every chance, but fell in a long, tight one.
