The finals are on Saturday because of the Sunday start in Melbourne – although that was true before the Australia Open decided last year to add an extra day of receipts to the till.

And, as is often the case the week before a major, there were surprises.

Elise Mertens pulled out of her opening tournament because of injury, but is all the way to the Hobart final.

Madison Keys played an extra event in Auckland after the tournament came calling to fill in a hole at the top level. She might not have won that one, but who’s to say that having those extra matches coming into Adelaide wasn’t a big factor this week?

(Hobart is 16 hours ahead of ET, Adelaide 15 1/2 hours).
