First-ever meeting between Félix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriel Diallo and, as Auger-Aliassime told Open Court on Sunday, it was going to happen eventually.

Auger-Aliassime came in on a wave of confidence after a grueling run through the field to the Brussels title. While Diallo had solid motivation to try to get back into the top 32 before the Australian Open.

In the end, Auger-Aliassime swatted away set point opportunities against him in the second set, and won in straights.

Also in Basel, Valentin Vacherot played his first match since his run from the qualifying to the title in Shanghai. And unfortunately for him, he draws No. 1 seed Taylor Fritz. Still, he showed every bit of the tennis that got him to that title before finally succumbing against a Fritz who didn’t play his best, but battled well enough to win.
