The women’s first-round qualifying was split over two days. So the nine remaining matches were squeezed between the men’s matches and feature some of the players who did well last week in Mérida and Austin.

Those include Ajla Tomljanovic, Daria Saville, Maya Joint and Zeynep Sonmez. It certainly seemed to be helpful.

Taylor Townsend also was in action against Yanina Wickmayer, the former No. 12 who is making another comeback. A routine win for the American.

In all, eight of the nine seeds who were in action on Monday got through.
