The had actually played a fair few times – four of the six on clay, where Musetti is 3-1 – notably the last time was the bronze-medal match at the Olympics in Paris.

Auger-Aliassime had won both hard-court meetings – both in 2022, and both indoors (Florence, and the Davis Cup finals).

But on this day, between his thumb and his quad and a tendon behind his knee, it was a slog.

Also in action, Novak Djokovic, with a good draw against the lucky loser Carabelli. And despite a tight second set, he’s through to meet Musetti.
