Lorenzo Musetti hoped to keep his drive alive to make it to the year-end finals in Turin, which are imminent and have basically all but begun without him. If he faced the best version of Sebastian Korda on Friday, he’d have a battle on his hands. And he needs to win the event to make it. And it was a battle. But he puled through.

As for Novak Djokovic, he got qualifier Yannick Hanfmann and he still hasn’t said one way or the other whether he will show in Turin.

After the president of the Italian Tennis Federation seems to have jumped the gun and confirmed his presence, Djokovic will likely be in even less of a hurry to announce his decision, which he says he’ll make after the end of this tournament.

That said, while he’s gotten through his matches, he hadn’t looked that great and if he doesn’t have a legitimate shot to make a deep run, with Carlos Alcaraz in his pool group, it’s too soon to tell if the money on offer is enough to get him there, since he already has more than he could ever spend.

But he looked pretty good on Friday – even of his opponent wasn’t ATP FInals-calibre.
