MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

WTA Rankings Report – As of April 21, 2025

Not many changes at the top, despite most of the top players taking part in the coveted WTA 500 in Stuttgart

But the astonishing Jelena Ostapenko gets back into the top 20 after a week during which she beat Iga Swiatek for the sixth time in six meetings, and then beat world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the final.

It’s definitely the headline of the week.

Also notable that Elena Rybakina exits the top 10 for the first time in more than two years. She had to go all the way to Australia to fulfil her commitment to the Kazakh BJK Cup team. And so she didn’t head immediately to Stuttgart where she had a title to defend. She skipped it.

And the Cana-Kiwis, winning Stuttgart, have vaulted back into the year-end race.

(First-round Madrid opponents in brackets)

Emma Navarro (USA): No. 11 ============> No. 10 (Navarro only made it to the second round in Stuttgart. But with defending champion Elena Rybakina not playing, she squeaks past her and back into the top 10 after three weeks out)(Bye, Qualifier/WC Cirez)

Elina Svitolina (UKR): No. 18 ============> No. 17 (First title in two years for the 30-year-old Ukrainian)(Bye, Cristian/Kartal).

Jelena Ostapenko (LAT): No. 24 ============> No. 18 (With her run to the Stuttgart title – including her sixth consecutive win over Iga Swiatek and her first over Aryna Sabalenka in the final – Ostapenko is back into the top 20)(Bye, Sevastova/Pavlyuchenkova).

Olga Danilovic (SRB): No. 39 ============> No. 34 (The former junior standout, now 24, took awhile to get her career going. But it’s been a good year and after making the Rouen final, she’s at a career high and less than 30 points out of a seed at Roland Garros)(Victoria Azarenka).

Mayar Sherif (EGY): No. 61 ============> No. 50 (The 28-year-old Egyptian out of Pepperdine has been quiet of late. But she gets herself back into the top 50 after winning the big ITF tournament in Madrid)(Jessica Bouzas Maneiro).

Katie Volynets (USA): No. 80 ============> No. 70 (The best name in women’s tennis moves up to after making the final of the rain-soaked WTA 125 in Oeiras) (Petra Kvitova).

Ella Seidel (GER): No. 124 ============> No. 111 (A lucky loser into Stuttgart, Seidel wins a round and moves up to a career high).

Dalma Galfi (HUN): No. 149 ============> No. 121 (The 26-year-old, whose career high is No. 79, wins the Oeiras WTA 125 event).

Jana Fett (CRO): No. 153 ============> No. 129 (The 28-year-old from Croatia qualified and won a round in Stuttgart).

Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah (FRA): No. 291 ============> No. 246 (The 19-year-old Frenchwoman with the exotic name movese to a career high after opening eyes in Rouen. She came through the qualifying and got to the quarterfinals).

Caty McNally (USA): No. 324 ============> No. 287 (The former No. 54’s return from a long-term injury is happening, as she made the final of the ITF in Zephyr Hills, Fla.).

Olga Danilovic (SRB) (No. 34)
Ella Seidel (GER) (No. 111)
Sofia Costoulas (BEL) (No. 212)
Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah (FRA) (No. 246)

Elena Rybakina (KAZ): No. 10 ============> No. 11 (Rybakina had BJK Cup commitments in Australia the previous week, and so didn’t go to Stuttgart to defend her title there. As a result, she drops 500 points and is out of the top 10 for the first time since Jan. 2023, when she leaped from No. 25 into the top 10 after the Australian Open. Her coaching situation still seems uncertain, and it appeared she was really struggling with some sort of eczema-like skin issuee in Brisbane. So there’s always something)(Bye, Kessler/Andreescu).

Marta Kostyuk (UKR): No. 25 ============> No. 36 (Kostyuk also played BJK Cup the week before Stuttgart, and didn’t play. She was a finalist a year ago so that drops her out of the top 30, and out of seeding contention in Paris, too. It’s as low as she’s been since Jan. 2024)(Bye, Lamens/Raducanu)

Marketa Vondrousova (UKR): No. 48 ============> No. 63 (Vondrousova has been out since Dubai … and she drops points from her Stuttgart semifinal a year ago, to fall out of the top 60).

Caroline Garcia (FRA): No. 99 ============> No. 117 (Garcia is having back issues, and she’s out of Madrid, too; she drops points from her semifinal in Rouen last year. It’s only her second week outside the top 100 since she first jumped in, after the 2013 edition of Roland Garros. And they’ve both some in recent weeks. Garcia came into 2025 after a long break late in 2024 determined, at long last, to at least enjoy the ride. And she said she is; it’s just that the results aren’t coming and the body isn’t cooperating).

Karolina Pliskova (CZE): No. 174============> No. 188 (There’s really been no signs of tennis life from the former No. 1, just a few shots from her academy in Czechia. But at least it looks like she’s hitting. She had surgery on the tendons in her left ankle in Sept. 2024).

Sloane Stephens (USA): No. 158 ============> No. 301 (Stephens is dealing with a foot injury, and her ranking is sort of falling off a cliff after dropping points from winning Rouen a yer ago. She’s outside the top 300 now).
