
Back in 2006, tournaments wanted to get rid of doubles entirely, unhappy with the scheduling difficulties and extra costs involved (especially hotel rooms).
It survived, but with sudden-death deuces, match tiebreaks, and easier entry rules for singles players.
Now, with Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares on the ATP board, after nearly two years of discussion, Murray said there will be changes for 2019.
They will have full 32-team draws at Masters 1000 events. And they’ve been working with the tournaments to find a way to promote teams, rather than individuals, as the players commit to doing more promotion at events.
