Poor day for Rafael Nadal in his Monte-Carlo back yard

There wasn’t much advance notice that Rafael Nadal would come out onto Court Rainier III Friday looking like a less-than-stellar version of his Monte-Carlo self.

But that’s what happened in his quarter-final match against Andrey Rublev Friday.

He served poorly. And the rest wasn’t much better even if he battled with his trademark bulldog sense of fight to snatch away the second set out of nowhere.

But in the end, Rublev broke him three times in the third set, and moves onto the semifinals Saturday.
