MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

Andreescu’s next GDL challenge: Jessica Pegula (vid)

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – After losing a high-level match in San Diego to Coco Gauff, but feeling as though her tennis was genuinely headed in the right direction, Bianca Andreescu had the thought that the Guadalajara Open might just be her tournament.

So far, through two victories against Jil Teichmann and Petra Kvitova, Andreescu has shown good form and good fight.

And great spirits, even though she admitted after her win over Kvitova that she was a little too emotional in the first set.

(She also was pretty open about the reason why; in addition to rocking the tennis court, Andreescu is rocking her interviews on this road trip as well. LOLOLOL).

The two have met twice before. And if there’s a common thread it’s that the player who was on a roll prevailed.

Andreescu had just returned from a breakout trip to Australia when she landed in Newport Beach, Calif for a Challenger early in 2019. She overcame a bagel in the first set to win the final.

In Madrid, Andreescu hadn’t really gotten rolling yet, having just begun her 2022 season the previous week in Stuttgart. She had posted wins ove Alison Riske and Danielle Collins coming into the match with Pegula. But only had one good set in her while Pegula was solid throughout.

Pegula went all the way to the final, losing to Ons Jabeur.

The American barely got through a third-set tiebreak win over WImbledon champion Elena Rybakina Wednesday.

In fact, had she not just said, “What the heck, I’ll challenge that call” on match point, who knows what would have happened.

It was her first match after going deep in singles and doubles in San Diego, and it’s a fairly big adjustment on several fronts.

But the player who has qualified for both singles and doubles at the WTA Tour Finals has known how to get through all season.
