MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

WTA Roma – Wednesday, May 17, 2023 final results

ROME – Paula Badosa didn’t much time to rest up before she faced Jelena Ostapenko for a spot in the Italian Open semifinals. It showed, as she was a half-step slow and appeared to be struggling physically – perhaps the back, as she’s had strips of take on the lower part.

And a match that could well be a final, but ended up a quarterfinal by the sinister doings of the draw gods, pitted reigning Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek against reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.

It didn’t end well for Swiatek, who ended up retiring at 2-2 in the third set after starting the match on fire, but suffering some sort of leg injury in the second set.

(Rome is six hours ahead of EDT).
