Bianca Andreescu got through her opening match against wild card Sonay Kartal.

She had the last slot on Tuesday against a different proposition – tall Spaniard (and former Swiss) Rebeka Masarova, who is much more of a straightforward power player. And Masarova just ran all over her, playing an impeccable match.

In Eastbourne, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, who have not had much grass-court prep, got under way along with Caroline Garcia and Ons Jabeur. And everyone got through.

And Petra Kvitova vs Jelena Ostapenko – which was a first-round matchup between the two players who won the grass-court events last week – never happened as Kvitova withdrew. And Ostapenko, who just keeps trucking along in both singles and doubles, got through.
