The qualifying got under way in Montreal on Sunday. And there were some top-shelf players who didn’t even get a sniff of the main draw in action.
In addition to the Canadians, there was Wimbledon sensation Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, who got a tough one in Mackenzie McDonald and almost, but not quite, pulled it out.
Four of the top five seeds in qualifying went out.
In D.C., the finals took place later Sunday – probably just in time for another thunderstorm or two.
They certainly would have hoped for a showtime final between Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe in that martket – especially as Tiafoe is a local.
Of course, they got Sebastian Korda vs. Flavio Cobolli. And Korda won the biggest title of his career, one his father Petr also won, and jumped into the top 20 for the first time.
