Jasmine Paolini was a late scratch in Ningbo, the top seed done and the draw re-jigged. She’s was far from the only one to pull out late, after the draw was made, at a tournament where the qualifying draw wasn’t strong and the lucky losers a consequence of that. Yafan Wang, Anastasia Potapova, Ekaterina Alexandrova … the list goes on.

Tough to have a WTA 500 and offer nearly a million in prize money if that’s going to happen – although, to be fair, this is October and this most often happens. And then there was rain on Tuesday, which also didn’t help.

On the plus side, Bianca Andreescu was back. On the down side, she didn’t have much.
