The seeds meet in Beijing. And that included No. 2 seed Coco Gauff vs. No. 25 seed Leylah Fernandez.

The two first met all the way back in 2018, in Fernandez’s first junior Slam, in the quarterfinals. Gauff won it, and went on to win the title. She was 14; Fernandez was 15. They didn’t meet again until the start of this season. And in this, their third meeting of the year, Gauff barely escaped with a three-set win.

With all the seeds going out, the only other seed v seed matchup of note was No. 13 Karolina Muchova vs. No. 18 Paula Badosa, who was playing her first WTA event in months. But who could not last the first set before retiring.
