The top players on Tour will mostly be taking a collective deep breath after a series of tournaments in the Middle East, including back-to-back WTA 1000s.
So the fields this week at the 500 in Mérida and the 250 in Austin will suffer for that, even though Americans Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro are playing.
What does that mean? Huge opportunities for those who do play.
Three seeds, including the defending champion, were already out in Austin on the first day.
And Anna Kalinskaya, who took a wild card and was the No. 4 seed, is out (again – a pattern this year) with “illness” (unspecified) before the start of play.
