Sofia Kenin, an 18-year-old American who won the USTA’s wild card challenge and made it all the way to the third round of the US Open, announced on Instagram Sunday that she was turning pro.
Ranked No. 139 coming in, Kenin was keeping her college options open. She had earned just over $56,000 in 2017 but couldn’t take it, other than allowable expenses.
But a third-round check from the US Open is $140,000 US. That’s far too much money to walk away from.
Kenin will be about No. 110 in the new rankings.
