The “Famous Canadian Poutine” Taste Test

BRISBANE, Australia – The ATP Cup / Brisbane International event features a food truck that boasts, among other delicacies, a “Famous Canadian Poutine” option.

Now, just like a restaurant on the other side of the world that might offer “genuine New York bagels”, it’s understandable to look upon this claim with some skepticism.

As a born-and-bred québécoise, it felt as though this should not go unchallenged. Although, despite multiple requests, it took nearly a week in Brisbane to finally muster up the courage to put it to the test.

And so, off we went on Wednesday.

(It should be noted that I’m not a poutine fan in general, despite the cultural proclivity. The individual ingredients are fine enough; it’s the mish-mashing of them into one bowl that makes it somewhat questionable as a delicacy. But I know a good one when I taste one).

Total cost: “Famous Canadian poutine”: $15 AUD

And with that, in the best Quebec tradition, Pepsi – not Coke. Another $6 AUD.

Total: $21 AUD.
