Genie Bouchard played her first competitive match since the end of January in a tough first-round encounter with Veronika Kudermetova of Russia – and came through impressively.

But the rest of the main-draw matches were wiped out by rain. In Lexington, a long rain delay pushed the qualifying matches to the indoor courts as play got under way in the main draw around 3:30 p.m.

In the end, Serena and Venus Williams will not play doubles in Lexington. Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sloane Stephens, who played together some in World Team Tennis when Mattek-Sands wasn’t teaming up with Genie Bouchard, did take a wild card.
