But the trend of qualifiers, which multiple matches under their belts, doing well and upsetting higher-ranked players continued.

Wild cards also put in a good showing, including teenager Lorenzo Musetti’s upset win over No. 10 seed Stan Wawrinka.

Canadians Denis Shapovalov and Milos Raonic also posted good opening wins.
