But as it is, it was pretty close – an unusual dénouement after a most unusual fall edition of the BNP Paribas Open.

Of the four, two-time Indian Wells champion Victoria Azarenka obviously had the resumé.

But did she have the game to beat Paula Badosa Sunday? Almost. But not quite.
