MORE TENNIS THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

TVA – Attitude “adjustment’ needed, but Andreescu gets through in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In her first match since the US Open, Canadian Bianca Andreescu came up against a quality opponent in the first round of the San Diego Open Monday night.

Liudmila Samsonova, at No. 22, had been in the qualifying until Beatriz Haddad Maia withdrew late. Andreescu, with a protected ranking of No. 22, was in a similar situation.

In the end, both got in. And in the end on Monday, Andreescu came through 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-2

She’ll play the winner of No. 6 seed Coco Gauff and qualifier Robin Montgomery – both 18, but nearly 300 spots apart in the rankings.

Here’s our piece for TVA Sports, which includes a fun (and funny) post-match interview with the clearly still adrenalized Andreescu – almost straight off the court.

Those are the best kind of interviews; the players come off much more human and unfiltered than they do when they come into press 90 minutes after their match. At that point, they’re freshly showered, the hair looks good and they’ve come down the competitive high. But they’re also much more programmed.

Here’s what it looked like courtside.
