MELBOURNE, Australia – Along with No. 2 seed and reigning champion Aryna Sabalenka, and No. 4 seed Coco Gauff, come a host of surprises as the bottom half of the women’s draw goes into the second week.
Mirra Andreeva, the 16-year-old who made a great escape in her previous round against Diane Parry (with some help from Parry, ’tis true) gets the solid No. 9 seed Krecjikova and gets a bit of a Grand Slam tennis lesson.
Sabalenka had a bit of the challenge of the unknown in facing Amanda Anisimova, who paused her career last year, is playing great tennis upon her return this week – and is 4-1 career vs Sabalenka – but remains an unknown quantity as to consistency and stamina. Sabalenka had little trouble.

Great pic of Andreeva, “who made a great escape in her previous round against Anna Blinkova.” Perhaps against Diane Parry. Great match though – perhaps the greatest of the tournament, we’ll have to see.
Wasn’t great. But it was dramatic.
