Plenty of “local” content at the opening Asian events with Jerry Shang playing in the Chengdu final, and Zhang Zhizhen in the inaugural tournament in Hangzhou. That can’t help but help with attendance.

But in tennis’s big picture, the return of 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic, in his first ATP-level event, reaching the final is a great story. Winning it was even better.

And for Shang, who looked unruffled throughout, a first career title.

But while that’s going on, the final round of qualifying in Tokyo and the first round of qualifying in Beijing are also going on.

The swing is for real, even if no one can quite remember when each individual tournament starts and ends.
