Christopher Eubanks is back at “home” on grass, in Mallorca as the No. 8 seed and looking to turn the tide on a pretty dismal 2024 so far.
He had a good win in Halle against Bublik, and a near-miss to Zhang Zhizhen. But in Mallorca he was the defending champion of his only career title so far.
That could be great, that could also be tighty-whitey time. May have been the latter as he was beaten by Jakub Mensik, an 18-year-old Czech who was injured at Madrid, missed Roland Garros, and lost in the first round to less-than-distinguished opponents at both ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Halle in the first two grass-court matches of his pro career. That’s a rough one.
In Eastbourne, Kei Nishikori WAS supposed to be back again, after retiring from his second-round Roland Garros match.
But Nishikori was a late scratch, as was Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Both were replaced by lucky losers who happened to be British. But even if precuationary, never a good sign for Wimbledon.
